"Time for the eyes to adjust" by Linn Ullman
This project was to design a physical book for the book Time for the Eyes to Adjust. The book describes a journey back through time to the author’s (Linn Ullmann’s) childhood. I chose photography paper for the book’s endpapers because it fades with the exposure to the sun and the passage of time. The text’s treatment illustrates individual relationships and their developments. The distance between the author and her father is emphasized with the use of negative space between each letter/word. All the text inside the book consists of hand-written letters which are nostalgic but also enigmatic. This style is employed throughout the text putting the viewer in the author’s position. The book is a sculpture of sincerity and vulnerability allowing dust and scratches to exist. This idea relates to the author as a normal human being subjected to the vagaries of life.
